15cm / 6 inches long, and 4.5cm / 2 inches approx. At its widest point. Solid Sterling Silver. This is a very beautiful and rare gift to give or to own. The Blade is Hand Cut from a sheet of solid Sterling Silver and fitted to a handle carved in zoomorphic Hounds Heads from the Book Of Durrow. My deepest gratitude to Aidan Meehan for drawing my attention to this classic design. As with all Desmond's work, he hand draws, hand carves and hand finish's all his work.

The Heron Annular

Options

Designed, hand carved, and hand finished by Desmond. It took 150 hours from start to finish, and the master model had to be made in 8 pieces. Weighing 145g of sterling silver, the ring diameter measures 10cm x 9cm. The pin length 20cm with the head carved in a zoomorphic of two Celtic dogs, symbols of loyalty, from the Book of Durrow, and secured with a carved ring. This allows the free movement of the pin, as this is a fully working Annular, based on late 8th century Irish brooch work. Below which is a trefoil knot or trinity knot? Then there is the Ring. I was inspired by the Ballyspellan bossed Penannular, with its open mouthed beasts. Though I followed through with a theme of mine which is the heron zoomorphics, that spill from the rim of the Hunterston brooch. These fantastic brooches were a creation of Irish artists and later Dal Riada colonies in Scotland developed the Penannular, which differed from the Annular, as an actual cloak clasp. The Annular was more a decorated pinhead and a display of high ranking in society. The early 7th century Annulars styles made use of glass and amber and tended to be of cast bronze with gold fire gilded. It was when the Viking arrived that great amounts of silver became available and the styles changed.
