There are many stories telling of the origin of the Claddagh design. The one that has my attention is of a Richard Joyce who in 1675 was captured by Algerean pirates, and sold into slavery.Richard was bought by a Muslem Goldsmith who had him working as a jeweller. After 14 years, Joyce was able to buy back his freedom and returned to Ireland with the design of a heart held by protective hands, and set up a workshop in Galway. For more history of Irish captives sold into the Algerean Slave Markets, please read "The Stolen Village",by Des Ekin. Published by O'Brien Books.
